Abstract

This study examines the architectural and safety implications of establishing a lithium-ion battery (LIB) manufacturing facility in Kogi State, Nigeria, within the context of the country’s growing strategic interest in domestic value addition from its lithium resources. The research develops a safety-integrated architectural framework grounded in the principles of Design for Safety (DfS), aimed at mitigating the inherent hazards of LIB production. Using a qualitative and analytical approach, the study synthesizes existing literature on LIB manufacturing risks, particularly thermal runaway, and evaluates international safety standards for adaptation to the Nigerian context. Findings indicate that LIB production presents critical hazards, including high-intensity fires and the emission of toxic gases such as hydrogen fluoride and carbon monoxide. These risks are further exacerbated by local challenges, including weak regulatory enforcement, infrastructural deficits, and the prevalence of substandard construction materials. The study demonstrates that reliance on external regulatory compliance is insufficient in such contexts, necessitating an intrinsically safe architectural approach. It proposes a layered risk-mitigation strategy that integrates passive fire protection, explosion control, chemical containment, and advanced ventilation systems into the early stages of design. The paper concludes that the successful development of a lithium battery factory in Nigeria depends on embedding safety within the architectural process itself. It recommends the adoption of robust DfS frameworks, precise material specifications, and context-sensitive design strategies to ensure environmental sustainability, operational safety, and long-term resilience.
